Modern Surf, Manchester,

Innovative Leisure Destination

More Information

Located on an abandoned industrial site to the north-west of the Trafford Centre, Modern Surf will be the most innovative simulated surf destination in the country.

Aligned to the announcement of Surfing and Skating as Olympic sports, the project aims to create a new destination leisure venue for Manchester, centred around a specially designed cove and utilising wave generating technology powered by Wavegarden, world leaders in surf engines.

Unlike other inland surf venues that aim to re-create a beach environment with sand and palm trees, the concept for Modern Surf developed by LJA aims to fuse the surf culture with the industrial past of the Trafford City region, integrating skating, bouldering and other activities to create an Urban Surfing environment.

The proposals include a new cluster of hub buildings, adopting an industrial saw-tooth roof aesthetic that takes cues from the surrounding history of working railways and canal industries. As well as accommodating the surf support and academy uses for the cove, the hub buildings will offer a unique food & beverage destination venue for Manchester, benefiting from expansive viewing terraces and events areas.

The designs include street artwork collaborations and a generous interactive landscape public realm for workout and play.
