Enhancing the Gateways to Highcross

LJA were commissioned to deliver four major entrance upgrades for Leicester’s Highcross Shopping Centre, enhancing the gateways at High Street, Church Gate, East Gate and Bond Street with contemporary designs that celebrate the city’s rich textile manufacturing heritage of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Textile Inspired Arrival Moments at Highcross

As a celebration of Leicester’s textile craftsmanship, each entrance is shaped to reflect iconic fashion elements. Visitors encounter runway inspired gestures, a dramatic curtain reveal, and a sculptural pleated form that highlights the precision of tailored fabric, creating arrival moments that honour the city’s creative legacy.

A Full Day Destination for Visitors

Highcross Leicester stands as one of the region’s leading retail destinations, home to more than one hundred shops ranging from flagship stores to independent brands, including a major John Lewis. Complementing the retail offer, the centre hosts forty restaurants and cafés, a Showcase Cinema de Lux, and two large car parks, creating a vibrant, full‑day experience for visitors.

“Bringing this scheme from vision to reality has been our focus. As delivery architects, we’ve ensured the original concept inspired by Leicester’s lacemaking heritage is fully realised in the built project.”
