Watford’s extension gets the go-ahead

Leslie Jones Architecture, appointed by intu, is now placed to move ahead with a £100 million project to integrate Charter Place with the adjacent existing intu Watford shopping centre.

Leslie Jones and intu, the UK’s leading shopping centre consumer brand, are working together to bring intu’s brand promise to life through design. The integrated development will result in a vibrant 1.4million sq ft retail, leisure and catering destination for local people and the wider North London area to shop, eat and play. The plans will transform Watford, creating additional retail and leisure space, including a nine-screen cinema with IMAX and vibrant new restaurant quarter, helping to increase dwell time beyond traditional trading hours. The redevelopment will also include investment in a new public square with lighting and street furniture, providing the area with the capacity to hold public events.

The design will integrate the existing buildings and features a diversity of architectural forms with gable-inspired facades and a dynamic glazed covering to the central space. Construction is expected to start during 2015, with the new destination scheduled to open in 2017.
