Sheffield makes shortlists

The Leslie Jones designed Moor Market in Sheffield has been shortlisted for both the Wood Awards 2014 and the Brick Awards 2014, for the innovative use of the respective materials in the building.

Leslie Jones Architecture designed and delivered the market for Sheffield City Council at the end of last year. Wood is an integral part of the design, both externally and internally with Glulam timber chosen for both the geodesic entrance arch and main market hall roof structures, while an innovative timber-weave cladding system is used externally. This cladding alternates with projecting courses of 490 mm long bricks, which echo the Victorian red-brick architecture of Sheffield.

Magnus Wills, Senior Architect at Leslie Jones, will be providing a detailed talk on the use of wood in the project at this year’s Timber Expo on 7-8 October.

The winners of the Brick Awards and Wood Awards will be announced on 12 November and 18 November respectively.
