We are really delighted that our Freshney Place Scheme in Grimsby for North East Lincolnshire Country Council is commencing on site. LJA was instrumental in securing planning approval for the major transformation of Freshney Place, including the adaptive reuse of the former BHS unit to create a vibrant new market hall. The approved scheme also introduces a new leisure anchor and high-quality public square, integrated with improved pedestrian access and upgraded public realm.
By anchoring the proposals in social and civic uses and with the scheme now on site, we helped to reposition Freshney Place as a more diverse, inclusive town centre asset. This repurposing strategy is central to reactivating the town centre and reinforcing its civic function as a place destination for the daytime and evening economies. We also developed a wider strategic masterplan, creating a vision that aligned with local priorities for economic resilience and community wellbeing which also demonstrated the wider opportunity for growth of the town which benefitted from successful Future High Streets and Towns Fund applications.
Our excellent working relationship with the local authority client as owner and planning authority was key to the project’s success. We supported the council in articulating the scheme’s value to stakeholders and worked collaboratively across departments to ensure alignment between design, policy, and funding.
A truly fantastic scheme supporting the growth and regeneration of a worthwhile and valuable town centre. Well done to all involved!
