The importance of sketching in design.
- Joe Kelly – Architect
We want to make places that matter and enrich people’s lives. To do that, we thoroughly explore and test ideas through a positive, collaborative and open design process that starts with sketching. For us, it’s only by putting thoughts on paper that we can fully explore ideas, unravel complexity, resolve issues and get to the heart of a project.
Sketching gives us the freedom to brainstorm and test how a place works, how it fits into the environment and how people will use it before taking plans further. And it allows us to communicate and collaborate with clients, contractors and the design team in a way that talking does not. That’s not to say we don’t use all the other tools at our disposal, such as models and CGIs, we do, but the process always begins with a pen.
