Leslie Jones Architecture has led the masterplan for the comprehensive mixed-use development in the Heritage Quarter of Gravesend.

The latest plans for the town centre have been reshaped from the previous retail led development to provide a true mixed-use scheme focussing on town centre revitalisation comprising much needed new homes, a new town square, restaurants, leisure, hotel and office space.

The scheme is particularly complex due to the significant number of adjacent listed buildings. Leslie Jones has applied its technical expertise in conservation to design an innovative yet sympathetic masterplan for the site, considering the historic urban grain in the context of modern and flexible town centre uses.

Adept at dealing with a multitude of stakeholders, Leslie Jones has been holding detailed consultations with Heritage England, Design South East, the local authority, conservation officer, local groups and other public bodies.

The proposals include the refurbishment of the St George’s Shopping centre which are due to start on site 2019 Q1.  Plans for St Andrew’s Wharf and Market Square are due to be submitted for planning 2019 Q1/Q2, which will then follow with a submission for Princess Place.

The scheme illustrates the challenges faced by our towns but also the benefits to be gained through the reuse of brown field sites and the judicious use and reuse of existing retail space.
